“The mother of all modern airports.”

— Sir Norman Foster about Tempelhof Airport

Last Call THF (Tempelhof)

When I stepped into the main entrance hall of the airport I was overcome by silence. In contrast to the stress of the city outside, this place was calm and relaxed. Although the airport still operated, the building felt deserted, and the only people present acted like extras on a movie set: a man reading the newspaper and waiting for his flight, a woman from the ground crew standing behind at the check-in counter waiting for passengers to come, the cleaning lady playing with her feather duster. It seemed as if time had lost its meaning.

Last Call THF is a close up of the moment when change happens. I was interested in the void that fills the space when something is lost and not yet replaced with something else/new. How do we endure this moment of void, especially when it lingers?

Berlin’s Tempelhof Central Airport closed all operations in 2008. The images were taken in the six month leading up to its shut down.
